I started playing tennis at the age of seven. I currently train four days a week, including two fitness sessions before school, and after school sessions. Over the summer season, I will be competing most weeks in events around the country.
County Closed Championships
I have won my age group singles title for the last 3 years (and in 4 of the last 5 years):
|Year||County Singles Winner||County Doubles Winner||Mixed Doubles Winner|
|2011||14 & Under||14 & Under||14 & Under|

|2009||12 & Under||12 & Under||n/a|
|2007||10 & Under||10 & Under||n/a|
County and Club Representation
I have played for Herefordshire & Worcestershire County every year since 2007. So far in 2012, I have represented the county at 16 & under level. Injury prevented me from playing for the 18 & under team. In 2011 I represented Herefordshire &Worcestershire at 14 & under and at 18 & under level.
In 2009, I played as number one player for the county in my age group, leading the four girl team through Regional Qualifying to the 12 & under National Finals (with H&W finishing in the top 6 counties in the country). I have played for Worcester Ladies A team since age 11.
As of April 2012, I was ranked top County player in the 16 & under age group. I have been ranked number 1 county player in all my relevant age groups since 2009. I was ranked in the top 60 nationally in 2011 at 14 & under level.
I won the county finals in both 2010 and 2011 to go on to play in the national HSBC Road to Wimbledon finals on the famous grass courts at Wimbledon. ¬†In 2011,¬†I won¬†my national qualifying group to reach the last 32 in the National Finals, before losing to the eventual winner. Ruth said ‚ÄėI played on Court 18 at Wimbledon ‚Äď the same court where in 2010, John Isner and Nicolas Mahut played the longest ever tennis match¬† – at just over 11 hours! ¬†My match did not take quite so long, but playing on a Wimbledon court was an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.‚Äô
I won the Herefordshire & Worcestershire County 15 & under Schools Doubles Competition with my sister Kate Horburgh in 2011.
Competition plans for next 6 months and Future Aims
I am currently recovering from a knee injury but I hope to be fully fit to compete over the important summer season. I am targeting the Junior County Closed titles in August. I also hope to do well in other top ranking competitions around the country. I am hoping to help RGS Worcester progress in the regional knockout stages of the AEGON Schools Tennis Competition.
¬†Ruth said ‚ÄėI am keen to develop my tennis career – an option may be to try for a tennis scholarship at an American University, or to go to a UK University which has a strong emphasis on sport.¬† In the meantime, I‚Äôll continue to work hard to improve as a player. The financial support that Sport Worcester has provided will be very helpful for the forthcoming season. ¬†It‚Äôs great that there is such an organisation to support Worcester sports people‚Äô.
