£76,254 to help 5th Worcester Sea Scouts recover from flood damage

The 5th Worcester Sea Scout Group in Northwick, Worcester has been awarded £76,254 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Flood Relief Fund to repair flood damage to the slipway and banks of the River Severn, badly damaged in the floods and storms of 2013.

Partnership funding from the Worcester Council Divisional Fund, Worcester Lions, Rotary Club and British Legion has also been awarded.

The recent storms and floods devastated homes, businesses and infrastructure across the country and also had major impact on sports facilities, particularly sports pitches and water sports centres. In February 2014, Sport England launched the £5 million Flood Relief Fund in a bid to help clean up and repair sports pitches and facilities and get them back up and running.

The 5th Worcester Sea Scout Group will use its award of £76,254 to restore the eroded riverbank, repair the damaged slipway, construct a flood barrier with floodlighting and install disabled access.

Jennie Price, Chief Executive of Sport England, says: “The storms and floods devastated many sports facilities across England. We want to play our part in helping communities get back to normal, and we are delighted to be able to get this emergency funding to The 5th Worcester Sea Scout Group to help it get back up and running as soon as possible.’

Robert Sidley, Group Scout Leader from the 5th Worcester Sea Scout Group said: “We are delighted that Sport England has awarded this funding to us which will allow us to repair our River Severn frontage and access, and re-open water activities to the children and young people of the 5th. This means that the 5th Sea Scout Group as well as other Paddle Sport Clubs and community users can once more benefit from these fantastic facilities.’
